How Flexible Packaging Impacts labeling

Flexible packaging appears to be here to stay! It has had a longer life span than most packaging trends. In an article by Emily Bryson York, Chicago Tribune reporter, it was stated that, “It took over 10 years to get people to accept it and now other big brands are going there,” said Jennifer Albert, director of marketing at StarKist. Brands like Campbell, Heinz, Gatorade and Kraft Foods are also adopting the flexible packaging method.

According to an article, ‘Eleven trends shaping flexible packaging‘ on packworld.com, the following are just some of the trends shaping flexible packaging, creating an advantage over box and can packaging.

  1. More easy-open, easy-reclose options.
  2. They have the capability of sweeping through entirely new product categories, like tuna fish and baby food.
  3. Flexible pouches are no longer a novelty and everyone is looking to expand into this trend.
  4. Shaped flexible packaging.
  5. More retortable pouches – A package that is “cooked” after being filled at high-enough temperatures and long enough to kill bacteria and microorganisms that can spoil food.

And these are just some of the reasons flexible packaging has an advantage. Flexible packaging also lends itself to easier labeling. Now, there are a few things to keep in mind when labeling. With rigid packages, the label is applied as part of the filling process. Labels and product don’t generally come from the same supplier, meaning the labels often cause a bottleneck in the filling process. Converting to flexible packaging allows for full printing features. Printing options are endless. Labels can also be applied directly to the film before packaging the product allowing for label placement to be spot on.
